Katoa, a featured “Best New Game” in the Apple App Store, has announced a new phase in its gaming-for-good innovation. In the latest update, new leaderboards will allow players to channel funding directly to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation as a Katoa partner. You can help us raise vital funds for the ocean, just by playing the game.
Gaming-for-good leaders, Sankari Studios, launched Katoa on Earth Day this year as a first-of-its-kind model. This innovative game allows anyone with a smartphone to help protect the Reef and other ecosystems. The game converts points into cash and, for the first time, this latest update will allow Katoa players to choose which organisation and subsequently which ecosystem they would like to support.
In the game, players are tasked with building and maintaining an underwater haven. They clean up pollution, plant new flora, and attract new adorable creatures to their environment. An in-game database allows players to learn about real-life oceanic flora and fauna, and the plights they face, while they play.

In the latest update, the highest scores around the world will automatically earn a spot on the game’s new leaderboards and the higher a player rises on the leaderboards, the more money that will be dispersed directly to their chosen non-for-profit organisation.
By converting in-game points into real-world funding, you will directly support the Foundation’s work to on the Reef. The more people who choose to play for the Great Barrier Reef, the more funding that will go to helping the Reef survive the impacts of climate change.
Katoa is available for both and devices.
