Nexa Advisory welcomes the announcement today by New South Wales Minister for Energy, Penny Sharpe MP, on the NSW Consumer Energy Strategy. This followed an extensive consultation by the Department for Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water in which Nexa Advisory participated.
Stephanie Bashir, CEO at Nexa Advisory, said: “The announcement today of the New South Wales Consumer Energy Strategy is an exciting step forward. In line with recommendations in our submission to the consultation, and other reports by Nexa Advisory, the steps that will now be taken will get New South Wales on track with its energy transition.
“We must make progress with major renewable energy generation and storage projects, and associated transmission, to ensure secure, reliable and affordable energy future for consumers of all types in the state. But Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, and this strategy will put the homes and businesses of the country’s first state in control.
“The strategy will put the power in the hands of the people of New South Wales, or rather – on their roofs. Collectively consumers will get this transition on track.
“As ever, the devil of a strategy will be in the implementation. It is critical that consumer preferences are prioritised, so that the households and businesses making the investments that will service our national power grid are appropriately rewarded and protected.”
Australia leads globally in rooftop solar installations, with over one-third of homes nationwide having installed rooftop panels.
Installation rates range from 46 per cent in Queensland to 20 per cent in Tasmania. Australians are drawn to rooftop solar PV because of the energy cost savings, reduced dependence on electricity from the grid, energy efficiency and environmental protection.
Rooftop solar already provides Australia broad system benefits by lowering wholesale electricity prices and reducing the carbon emissions intensity of the power system. Consumers investing, particularly in rooftop solar and batteries, are driving the transition to a clean electricity system.
With appropriate incentives, consumer energy market participation, and ‘demand response’ from users without consumer energy generation, have the potential to lower overall system costs..
