The ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Farmers’ Federation congratulates immediate past President Fiona Simson on her appointment to the new statutory Nature Repair Committee.
NFF President David Jochinke said the committee was key to advising the Minister for the Environment and Water on the new natural capital market that will allow farmers to invest more to improving biodiversity.
“Fiona is a highly respected voice in Australian agriculture and one who understands the role farmers are already playing in caring for the environment.
“As stewards of more than half of Australia’s landmass, farmers already work hard to look after the land at their own cost. This includes pest and weed management, revegetation and improving soils.
“It’s important this new market will unlock opportunities for farmers to be rewarded for the work they are already doing and incentivise them to invest further.”
The NFF also extends its congratulations to chair Stephen McCutcheon and members Brendan Foran, Tyronne Garstone, Siobhan Toohill, and Dr James Fitzsimons.
The new Nature Repair scheme is a Federal Government initiative to improve biodiversity by creating a marketplace where farmers, First Nations people, and organisations can apply biodiversity certificates, which can be sold to generate income in developing biodiversity markets.
“There is a lot of work to do to bring this market to life. The NFF actively involved in its development and continues to advocate for a viable, transparent market that maximises returns to farmers,” Mr Jochinke said.
