In the coming weeks, Hornsby Library will re-open after undergoing a multi-million-dollar upgrade – a welcome ‘coming out of lockdown’ gift for Hornsby Shire’s countless Library patrons!
With so many of Hornsby Shire’s population being signed-up members of our much-loved Council Libraries, we know COVID restrictions have been keenly-felt.
“Naturally, we were keen to re-open our four Hornsby Shire Libraries as soon as it was safe to do so, so we are delighted the latest NSW Government health advice permits library visits,” said Hornsby Shire General Manager, Steven Head.
“Council’s Pennant Hills, Galston and Berowra Libraries are already open for loaning and returning, with reduced operating hours.”
“In ordinary times, Council’s four Libraries welcome over 700,000 Library visits each year – but they haven’t been idle during the recent COVID lockdown.”
During lockdown, Hornsby Library’s long-awaited upgrade continued with a $4.7 million makeover.
Hornsby Library is soon to re-emerge as more welcoming, more flexible, better ventilated, and with more places to meet, read, learn – and have fun!
“The Library will feature a welcoming new children’s area, a bright new quiet study area, more space for computer sessions and more power-points for laptops and devices,” said Mr Head.
“Library patrons will enjoy an innovative ‘Discovery Space’ where they can undertake classes in crafts, such as jewellery making, or learning computer-coding with robots.”
The Library’s extensive collection, including print, audio and electronic resources, has also been rearranged around sociable seating-areas throughout.
“When re-opened, the refreshed Hornsby Library will resume its vital role as a community hub, supporting community book clubs, study groups, author talks, children’s story times and many other activities,” said Mr Head.
“The extensive refurbishments to Hornsby Library have not only made it more attractive, but also more comfortable, more up-to-date and interactive, and providing much more amenity, adding to the pleasure of the Library experience.
The Hornsby Library upgrade was funded from development contributions and external grants from the State Library.
“The library is certainly one of the most popular spots in Hornsby, giving enjoyment to locals of all ages. It’s great that the work has now been completed and that services will be available again soon in a COVID safe way,” Member for Hornsby, Matt Kean MP said.
“The NSW State Government is committed through the Public Library Infrastructure Grant program to ensure libraries are able to continue to service the community needs both now and into the future and I’m pleased some of this funding helped complete the Hornsby Library upgrade.’
The reopening date for the library will be announced in the next few weeks.
“Our dedicated staff are keen to welcome back our many patrons – and show them around the newly upgraded facilities,” said Mr Head.
When visiting a Hornsby Council Library, proof of full COVID vaccination for ages 16-and-over will be required on entry. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a fully-vaccinated parent or legal guardian aged 16 or over.
