Greensborough Highway Patrol caught up with two speedsters in Plenty and Bundoora yesterday.
Officers detected a Honda Integra driving on Yan Yean Road in Plenty, at an alleged speed of 124km/h in a 70km/h speed zone, about 5.30pm.
The driver, a 20-year-old South Morang man, had his car impounded for 30 days at a cost of $896.10 and will be summonsed to attend a magistrates’ court at a later date to face charges for exceeding the speed limit.
Later the same evening, highway patrol officers spotted a Holden Commodore driving at speed in Bundoora.
The Commodore was clocked travelling on the Metropolitan Ring Road at an alleged 186km/h in a 100km/h zone before it sped away about 10pm.
The Air Wing, hovering overhead, observed the driver dump the car nearby and flee on foot.
Police quickly located the driver hiding under a tree.
A 23-year-old learner driver from Mill Park, allegedly unaccompanied at the time, gave a positive breath test and was conveyed to a local police station where he returned an evidentiary breath test reading of .128.
The man’s car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $884. He will be summonsed to appear at a magistrate’s court at a later date for drink driving, excessive speed and licencing offences and breach of bail conditions.
These impounds and speed intervention form part of Operation Saturn, a two-and-a-half-week state-wide road policing operation.
The operation commenced on Thursday, 22 October and aims to prevent further trauma on our roads caused by dangerous driving in both metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. It focuses on increased traffic on rural roads, drink and drug driving, seatbelt compliance and driving slowly.
Operation Saturn will run from 12.01am on Thursday 22 October to 11.59pm on Sunday 8 November 2020.
