The Tasmanian Government confirms there will be no wage freeze in this year’s Budget for public servants.
In addition, while the wage increase for senior executives of the public sector were put on hold in July, there will be no further deferral. These increases will now proceed as usual, backdated to July 2020.
To be clear, all wage agreements will be honoured for both public servants and senior executives.
We recognise that the Tasmanian State Service and its senior leaders have worked tirelessly to ensure the continued delivery of services to our community during what has been an incredibly challenging period.
We know the economy and the Budget have taken a hit from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, we also recognise the importance of continued local economic stimulus, and any wage increase assists broader spending and confidence in our economy.
We are pleased in Tasmania that business confidence remains strong, with the NAB business survey for September 2020 confirming that Tasmania continues to buck the national trend with strong business confidence and conditions.
Prior to the pandemic we had a strong balance sheet, and it is from this strong position that we are able to continue delivering our Plan to rebuild a stronger Tasmania.
