Queenslanders who support and promote a united, harmonious and inclusive Queensland community are being encouraged to nominate for the 2019 Multicultural Queensland Awards.
Minister for Multicultural Affairs Stirling Hinchliffe said the nomination period for the awards had been extended to May 2 ensure as many worthy Queenslanders as possible get the chance to be recognised for their contribution.
“These awards are about acknowledging and showcasing the valuable contributions of individuals, groups, business and governments that bring people together, create a sense of belonging and help to build a prosperous, fair and harmonious Queensland,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“Many of these may be quiet achievers doing amazing work, so it’s appropriate that their work is recognised as a celebration of Queensland’s rich cultural diversity.
“Last year we saw worthy winners such as Yeronga State High School for leading the way in culturally inclusive practices, Football Queensland for using the power of sport to promote the benefits of cultural diversity and Townsville City Council for its commitment to employing people from diverse cultural backgrounds and bringing the Multicultural Queensland Charter to life.
“The closing date for nominations has been extended to May 2, so if you know of any individuals or organisations doing great work to welcome and support people from diverse backgrounds, or promoting the benefits of cultural diversity here in Queensland, I urge you to nominate before the cut off.”
For the first time this year, winners in most categories will receive $500 in prize money. The categories for this year’s awards are:
