Nominations are open for City of Darwin’s Citizen of the Year Awards, which recognise contributions made by individuals and groups to the Darwin community.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the Citizen of the Year Awards celebrated community members who go above and beyond to support others, as well as celebrating events that strengthen community bonds.

“These awards shine a spotlight on those who have made a profound impact on our city, whether through education, health, fundraising, volunteering, business, sports, arts, culture, or environmental stewardship,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Each year, we call on the community to nominate an Australian citizen who has made a significant contribution, either within the last year or on an ongoing basis, within our local government area.

“Nominees can be quiet achievers or individuals who have already received recognition for their service,” he said.

There are three categories of recognition:

  • Citizen of the Year: For an individual who has shown outstanding leadership, active citizenship, and service that has significantly benefited others.
  • Young Citizen of the Year: For a young person (aged 16 – 29) who has gone above and beyond to enhance their community.
  • Community Activity of the Year: For an event that has brought people together, strengthened community connections, and enriched Darwin life.

Nominations for the 2025 Citizen of the Year Awards close on 1 November 2024 and nominees will be announced in on Monday 2 December 2024.

Winners will be honoured at City of Darwin’s Australia Day Ceremony on Sunday 26 January 2025.
