Nominations for Cairns Regional Council’s are now open, providing an opportunity to recognise local individuals and groups who make an outstanding contribution to the region.

Award categories are:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Cultural Award
  • Junior Cultural Award
  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year

Deputy Mayor Terry James said the awards are an opportunity to shine a light on residents who make a real difference in the community.

“This is the chance to recognise someone who is doing extraordinary things in our community to ensure their efforts and achievements don’t go unnoticed,” Cr James said.

“There are many deserving people in the Cairns region – often quiet achievers – who help others and enriched the community through their good and selfless work.

“If you know someone who deserves their moment in the spotlight, we encourage you to take the time to nominate them, so we can recognise their achievements together.”

Last year’s Cultural Award recipient, James Kerr – who manages the Jabalbina On Country Program – said the awards are important in celebrating diversity, achievements and community spirit.

“Reflecting on the honour of receiving the 2023 Cultural Award of the Year, I was overwhelmed with pride, excitement, a profound sense of achievement, and genuine humility,” he said.

“To be recognised among such remarkable candidates was truly humbling.

“The benefits and achievements that followed were beyond measure.

“The community’s acknowledgment of our efforts, especially in nurturing a safe and respectful environment for our youth, was both heartening and motivating.

“The newfound connections and friendships forged within the community have enriched my journey.

“Attending various events, from basketball games to grand openings like the new Cairns Convention Centre, has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for community engagement.

“I urge every individual with a fervour for their community to seize this opportunity.

“Nominate someone whose dedication has significantly impacted Cairns.

“The act of nomination itself is empowering, it signifies that your contributions have not gone unnoticed. Even if victory eludes you, the affirmation of your efforts is a triumph in its own right.

“Join me as 2024 Ambassador in embracing the chance to shine a light on those who make our community brighter, for their passion and dedication are the bedrock of a thriving society.

“Let us unite in celebrating the unsung heroes among us and fuel the spirit of community excellence.

“Together, we can illuminate the path towards a more vibrant and compassionate society, one nomination at a time.”

Nominees must be residents of the Cairns Local Government Area.

Nominations are open until 4pm on Friday 15 December.
