Mayor’s Message
This week we continue to show our support of Opal workers following the Victorian Government’s early transition announcement from native timber
logging.
Native timber logging will cease by 1 January 2024, affecting one of the major industries in Latrobe City. It is expected to impact hundreds of workers at the Maryvale Mill, which has been a cornerstone of our City’s economic landscape for over 85 years.
While knowing cease dates is important for any major change, this announcement has come earlier than predicted – making the adjustment more challenging.
We acknowledge the support packages that have been announced by the Victorian Government through the 2023/24 State Budget. However, we continue to call for additional support including immediate action to fasttrack the establishment of the State Electricity Commission and associated renewable energy projects.
With this change we must work in alignment with ‘Our Transition’ plan to ensure that actions taken are strategic.
The plan provides clear actions that support transition including investment, upskilling and future jobs along with how government and private investment can work
collaboratively to ensure the success of our region.
Everyone is invited to read the plan at:
