Passengers travelling to and from Waurn Ponds now have access to more services and a bigger and better station, thanks to the completion of the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade.
The project has enabled 20 peak and shoulder peak services to be extended to and from Waurn Ponds Station per week – two in the morning and two in the evening each weekday.
Crews used the four-week May disruption on the Geelong and Warrnambool lines to complete minor works on the upgrade, including final fit-out on the new second platform and pedestrian overpass, and installation of the remaining 100 metres of track.
With these final works complete, all the station’s upgrades – including the new pedestrian overpass, ramps, stairs and lifts – are now open to the public, making it easier for all passengers to access the station.
These features add to the upgrades already opened to the public earlier this year, including the new forecourt, bike hoops and storage, passenger drop-off zone, and the upgraded car park with over 200 new and upgraded parking spaces.
Construction of a new walking and cycling path was fast-tracked to coincide with the opening of the second platform. Extending the current path from Baanip Boulevard along Muir Road to the station provides access from the south side for the first time for the growing communities of Mount Duneed and Armstrong Creek.
The project completion was celebrated with a community event at Waurn Ponds Station, which included a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, as well as live music, a petting zoo and a cricket workshop from the Melbourne Renegades.
