Farmers for Climate Action, an organisation representing more than 8000 farmers across Australia including 3100 farmers in New South Wales, has welcomed the passing of the NSW Climate Change (Net Zero Future Bill), which was improved after multiple parties negotiated together.
The new bill will add a 70% emissions reduction target for 2035.
FCA CEO, Natalie Collard, welcomed the news. “It’s fantastic that the Government, the NSW Liberal Party, NSW ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s, Greens and crossbenchers worked together to get an excellent result,” Ms Collard said.
“The emissions reduction target was strengthened to ensure stronger action on climate change and a more secure future for our farmers.
“The NSW Coalition has shown what can be achieved with sensible collaboration: increased focus on regional communities paired with increased ambition. What a fantastic outcome.
“We congratulate all involved and hope politicians across Australia and around the world are watching.”
Farmers for Climate Action also welcomed changes to the NSW laws that highlight the impact of climate change on rural communities and acknowledges the knowledge that rural communities hold in addressing the impacts of climate change.
FCA outreach officer and farmer from Harden, Peter Holding, said rural communities in New South Wales were at the forefront of climate impacts but were also helping to drive solutions. “Our members across the state are improving their farming practices and adopting technology to reduce emissions so it’s great to see their knowledge will be formally recognised in these laws.”
