The Australian Greens have called on the NSW and Federal Labor Governments to immediately halt logging of critical koala habitat
Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has a proposed law before the Federal Parliament to protect koala habitat from logging:
“We need an immediate halt to logging inside the promised Great Koala ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park and immediate action from Labor to pass laws which protect endangered koalas and our precious forests.
“Labor should halt the logging in NSW, get on with establishing the Great Koala ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park and back my Bill before the Senate to stop the logging of koala habitat.
“Australia is overdue for environment laws that actually protect koalas and forests, not laws that fast-track approvals for miners, loggers and developers.
“Thousands of hectares of koala habitat are logged across NSW each year. This is a major driver of extinction, not just for our precious koalas, but for many other threatened species like Greater Gliders and Glossy Black Cockatoos.
“Our precious native forests must be protected – for koalas and other threatened species that call them home, and for future generations to enjoy.”
The NSW Government has promised to establish a Great Koala ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park, but logging of koala habitat continues in the proposed area. Federal Labor have promised to fix Australia’s broken environment (EPBC) law.
