A new rooftop helipad will commence operations at Port Macquarie Base Hospital today, improving the safety and efficiency of transfers of critically ill patients.
Regional Health Minister Ryan Park said the helipad and car park relocation will improve access to emergency healthcare for patients.
“Moving the helipad from the old ground level site to the hospital rooftop, will give our aeromedical clinicians direct access to the emergency department and operating theatres when they bring in patients,” Mr Park said.
“Often our aeromedical teams are transporting some of our sickest patients, and this new helipad means transfers are quicker and patients can receive critical hospital care as soon as possible.
“This new rooftop helipad will strengthen accessibility to health services for the Port Macquarie-Hastings and Kempsey-Macleay communities.”
Operational commissioning of the new helipad was completed late last month, with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service succesfully completing landings and takeoffs from the new helipad.
The new helipad has special deck lighting which ensures optimal visibility for pilots during landing, especially at night.
Mid North Coast Local Health District Chief Executive Stewart Dowrick said the new helipad would be a valuable addition to the hospital.
“The existing helipad has undergone improvements over the years to meet the changing aircraft requirements so it’s exciting to have this purpose-built facility to address the future aeromedical needs of the local community and emergency services personnel,” Mr Dowrick said.
Labor Spokesperson for Port Macquarie Cameron Murphy said the new helipad is a welcome addition to the hospital.
“As one of the major referral hospitals for the region, this upgrade is a fantastic addition to Port Macquarie base,” Mr Murphy said.
“It’s estimated this new helipad will help transport 50 to 60 patients each year.”
Work on the new car park is expected to begin early next year and will provide more than 180 additional parking spaces on the health campus.
Car park works will also include improvements and expansion of existing car parks, ensuring safe and convenient access to hospital services for patients, visitors and staff into the future.
