A man is due to appear in court today charged over the deaths of two people on the ANZAC Bridge.
Emergency services were called to the citybound lanes of the bridge about 11.50pm Friday (2 December 2022), after a Commodore sedan hit two vehicles which had stopped due to an earlier minor collision.
The drivers of those two vehicles, a 25-year-old woman from Lidcombe and a 38-year-old man from Hurstville, suffered critical injuries when the car they were standing near was allegedly struck by the Commodore. Both died at the scene.
A passing taxi, being driven by a 24-year-old man from Westmead, was then struck by one of the vehicles when it was pushed into the third lane by the force of the impact.
The driver of the Commodore, a 41-year-old man from Burwood, was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and mandatory testing, before being released.
He was arrested at his home about 7.30pm yesterday (Saturday 3 December 2022) by investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit, and was taken to Burwood Police Station.
He has now been charged three offences: two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, and negligent driving occasioning death.
He’s been refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court later today (Sunday 4 December 2022).
