A man and three teenage boys have been charged following a pursuit on the state’s Mid North Coast yesterday.
About 5pm on Sunday (2 January 2022), officers attached to Richmond Highway Patrol were travelling on the M1 Motorway at Newrybar, when they detected a white Mazda utility exceeding the sign posted speed limit.
Checks revealed the vehicle had allegedly been stolen from a home at Old Bar the previous day (Saturday 1 January 2022).
The driver allegedly failed to stop as directed by police, and a pursuit was initiated from Newrybar to Evans Head. The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to the manner of driving.
A second pursuit was initiated before road spikes were successfully deployed at Woodburn-Evans Head Road, Woodburn, near the M1 Motorway overpass.
When the vehicle stopped, all four occupants fled the scene on foot, before the driver and the front seat passenger were arrested.
The remaining two passengers were located a short time later and arrested at Woodburn.
All four occupants were taken to Lismore Police Station.
The driver – a 17-year-old boy – was charged with police pursuit – drive dangerously, exceed speed limit over 45km/h, unaccompanied learner; not display L plates, drive conveyance without consent of owner and breach of bail. His learner’s licence was also suspended.
The passengers, a 19-year-old man and two 15-year-old boys, were each charged with being carried in conveyance without consent of owner. One of the teenage boys was also charged with shoplifting.
All three boys were refused bail to appear at a children’s court today (Monday 3 January 2022).
The man appeared at Lismore Local Court today, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at Byron Bay Local Court on Monday 10 January 2022.
