A man will face court today charged following a fire in a Surry Hills carpark yesterday, break-ins, and chase across rooftops with police.
Just before 11.45pm on Wednesday (19 June 2019), a man is alleged to have broken into a unit complex on Nobbs Street.
Emergency services responded to reports of a fire in the underground carpark of the same unit complex about 3am (Thursday 20 June 2019).
Upon arrival, officers attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command and NSW Fire and Rescue services evacuated some of the units.
A camper trailer and nearby vehicle were located well alight, before the fire was extinguished about 5am.
A crime scene was established, and all residents were returned with no injuries, and no smoke damage believed to have been sustained to any units.
About 6.30am, a man is alleged to have entered the backyard of a home on Bourke Street before accessing a vehicle and smashing a glass door with a crowbar.
The man threatened the occupants, demanding car keys.
After fleeing empty handed, it’s alleged the man entered the backyards of three homes on Nickson Lane.
Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command attended, and the man attempted to flee across rooftops on Nickson Street. The 33-year-old man was arrested after a struggle with officers.
The Gurrundah man was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with 10 offences including break enter and steal, damage property by fire (x2), take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, aggravated break and enter with intent – armed, demand property with menaces with intent to steal, enter inclosed land without lawful excuse (x3), and resist officer in execution of duty.
He has been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Friday 21 June 2019).
