NSW police charge man after FPO searches, public place shootings investigations continue

A man has been charged and remains in hospital following Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) searches yesterday, while investigations continue into public place shootings across Sydney’s west.

Detectives from Auburn and Ryde Police Area Commands are investigating public place shootings at Berala, Regents Park, and Ryde on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 May 2019.

As part of inquiries, Operation Talon – assisted by the South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad, North West Metropolitan Operation Support Group, and various Metropolitan Police Area Commands – conducted nine FPO searches at homes in West Ryde, Berala, Granville, Auburn, Ermington, Guildford, and Rydalmere yesterday (Thursday 30 May 2019).

During a FPO being served on a man at a Granville home, he became aggressive towards police and a struggle ensued where a male Senior Constable was allegedly assaulted.

The officer was taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for a fractured nose and lacerations, and has since been released.

The 22-year-old Granville man was also taken to Westmead Hospital to be treated for minor injuries sustained during the arrest, where he remains under police guard.

During a search of the Granville home, police seized two knives concealed in metal purpose-made cylinders.

The man has since been charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, resist officer in execution of duty, use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order, and possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit.

He was refused bail to appear via AVL before Parramatta Local Court today (Friday 31 May 2019).

Detectives from Ryde and Auburn Police Area Command will continue their extensive investigations into the shootings, and Operation Talon will continue assisting with proactive policing strategies.

Operation Talon is a proactive policing strategy to prevent and disrupt public act of violence, including shootings, and target the possession and supply of illicit firearms.
