A man has faced court charged over the alleged assault of seven police officers in the state’s Murray River region.
On Sunday (19 December 2021), officers from Murray River Police District commenced an investigation after receiving a report that a 43-year-old woman had been assaulted, by a man known to her.
Following inquiries, officers sighted a 36-year-old man at the intersection of Captain Cook Drive and Hicks Place, North Albury, about 1.45am yesterday (Monday 20 December 2021).
Police approached the man and upon placing him under arrest, he allegedly assaulted the officers before fleeing.
Following a short foot pursuit, the man continued to resist officers and OC spray was deployed.
Additional police – including from Victoria – attended to assist with the man continuing to assault officers, kicking and punching them.
The man was detained and taken to Albury Base Hospital, under police guard, for treatment of minor cuts and abrasions.
Upon his release, he was transferred to Albury Police Station where he was charged with 21 offences, including:
- Intentionally choke etc person without consent (DV),
- Destroy or damage property (DV) (x2),
- Resist officer in execution of duty (x10),
- Assault officer in execution of duty (x7), and,
- Escape police custody
It will be alleged in court that the man assaulted six NSW Police officers and spat in the face of an officer from Victoria Police.
The man appeared at Albury Local Court yesterday (Monday 20 December 2021), where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on Monday 10 January 2022.
