A man has been charged with driving offences following a police pursuit in the state’s far north.
Shortly before 11am yesterday (Monday 24 January 2022), officers attached to Richmond and Tweed/Byron Police Districts, Far North Traffic and Highway Patrol and the Northern Rivers Region Enforcement Squad (RES) were notified of a Mitsubishi Pantech truck – believed to have been stolen from a business near Brisbane last Saturday (22 January 2022) – travelling north on the Pacific Highway at West Ballina.
Officers initiated a pursuit, whereby road spikes were successfully deployed four times as the truck continued north.
As the truck approached Chinderah, it crossed to the wrong side of the road and came to a stop a short distance away.
The driver – a 29-year-old man – was arrested without incident and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
He was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, steal motor vehicle, possess prohibited drug, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous and never licensed person drive vehicle on road.
The man from Bethania in Queensland was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today (Tuesday 25 January 2022).
