NSW police charge man over jewellery theft in Sydney

A man has been charged over a jewellery theft in the Sydney CBD, after allegedly being arrested while wearing some of the stolen jewellery.

About 1.45pm on Monday 12 August 2019, a man entered a loan office on George Street, Sydney, and enquired about gold chains and rings.

A staff member produced a tray of numerous jewellery items, worth up to $20,000. The man grabbed the tray and ran from the store.

The incident was reported to officers from Sydney City Police Area Command, who commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, about 10am yesterday (Monday 19 August 2019), a 21-year-old man was arrested leaving a court on Liverpool Street.

At the time of his arrest the man was allegedly wearing some of the stolen jewellery.

He was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with larceny between $5000 and $15000.

He was refused bail to appeared before Central Local Court yesterday (Monday 19 August 2019), and was remanded in custody to reappear in the same court on Monday 26 August 2019.
