NSW police charge teen over vehicle theft at Tamworth

A teenage boy has been charged over the theft of a motor vehicle in the state’s north west.

On Saturday (29 October 2022), a man and woman were seated in a Mitsubishi station wagon on King Street, West Tamworth, when they were approached by a group of people who demanded they get out of the vehicle.

The pair got out after allegedly being threatened with a knife and officers from Oxley Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

The Mitsubishi later attended service stations in Tamworth and Moree, where the occupants allegedly failed to pay for petrol.

The vehicle was later involved in a pursuit with police at Tamworth just before 2am yesterday (Sunday 20 October 2022), travelling towards Gunnedah before it was terminated due to safety concerns.

It was later found abandoned in Moree, with five people seen fleeing. A 13-year-old boy was arrested and taken to Moree Police Station.

He was charged with aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle – armed with weapon, enter building/land with intent commit indictable offence, and dishonestly obtain property by deception.

He was also charged with damage property by fire/explosion, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and three counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception for unrelated matters.

The teen appeared at a children’s court today (Monday 31 October 2022), where he was granted conditional bail to reappear on Monday 19 December 2022.
