NSW police charge three after CBD Christmas event disrupted

Police have charged three men after festivities to mark the lighting of the Martin Place Christmas tree were disrupted.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were in Martin Place about 6.15pm (Saturday 23 November 2019), where thousands of people had gathered.

Police have been told three men had been ejected from a nearby store by security after creating a disturbance, when one allegedly stole a traffic control light wand from an official.

The man then climbed onto the stage in Martin Place, disrupting performers.

Police removed the man from the stage, then arrested his friends when they allegedly tried to intervene.

All three were taken to Day Street Police Station and charged.

A 23-year-old man, from Wentworth Falls, has been charged with offensive behaviour, larceny, and resist police.

A 20-year-old man, from Blackheath, has been charged with assault police, offensive behaviour, and resist or hinder police.

A 21-year-old man, also from Wentworth Falls, has been charged with offensive behaviour and two counts of resist police.

The three men have been granted strict conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 15 January 2020.
