Three people have been charged following extensive investigations into a fatal crash at Albion Park Rail earlier this month.
About 2.20am on Saturday 18 May 2019, a Ford Territory SUV travelling south on the Princes Highway struck a petrol tanker, which was turning out of Creole Street.
A 27-year old man, who was a passenger in the Ford, died at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Territory, a 25-year-old woman, and two other passengers, a man and woman, both aged 25, were also hospitalised.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Warrane to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As part of investigations, police arrested and charged a 34-year-old man in Lisarow on Wednesday 22 May 2019, who was later charged with murder and armed robbery. He remains before the courts.
Following further inquiries, officers from Lake Illawarra and Wollongong Police Districts, with the assistance of the Dog Unit and PolAir, conducted a police operation in the Figtree area yesterday (Thursday 30 May 2019).
Just after 10am, three people were seen in a vehicle on Cleverdon Crescent.
Officers attempted to stop the Nissan Navara on O’Briens Road, before a pursuit was initiated involving Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol and PolAir.
The Nissan left the road at Redgum Forest Way and drove into parkland, stopping at a creek.
The driver fled and was pursued by the Dog Unit. With the assistance of PolAir, the 27-year-old man was arrested in the rear yard of a home on Govett Crescent.
Two passengers, a 29-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, were arrested in the Nissan.
They were all taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
The younger man was charged with the outstanding warrant for murder, along with take & drive conveyance without consent of owner, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.
The older man and woman were charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
All three have been refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 31 May 2019).
