Two men have been charged following an alleged police pursuit in the state’s north overnight.
About 1.20am (Tuesday 22 March 2022), officers were conducting patrols of the Tweed Valley Way at Chinderah when they observed a black Dodge Ram – allegedly bearing stolen NSW registration plates – travelling east.
Police initiated a pursuit before the Dodge allegedly conducted a U-turn and began travelling west along the same road.
The pursuit continued to South Murwillumbah when the vehicle again conducted a U-turn and began travelling east on Tweed Valley Way.
Road spikes were successfully deployed at Tumbulgum, before the vehicle came to a rest in a nearby drain.
Two men fled from the vehicle before they were both arrested after a short foot pursuit.
Both men were taken to Tweed Heads Police Station before the driver – a 23-year-old man – was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for observation.
He has since been released and taken back to Tweed Heads Police Station, where he was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, resist officer in execution of duty, receive property stolen outside NSW and goods suspected stolen in/on premises.
The passenger, a 22-year-old man, was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, resist officer in execution of duty and throw missile at police in execution of duty.
Both men were refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court later today (Tuesday 22 March 2022).
