NSW Police Force Sergeant awarded Order of Australia Medal

Congratulations to Detective Sergeant Mark Meredith for being awarded an Order of Australia Medal as part of the Governor-General’s Australia Day honours.

Detective Sergeant Meredith has served with the NSW Police Force for almost 35 years in the Orana Region and was recognised for his service to the community.

After the death of his son, Perry, in 2016, Detective Sergeant Meredith began advocacy work for ‘Livin’ – non-profit mental health organisation.

Together with his brother, Detective Sergeant Meredith hosted the inaugural Tradies Breakfast at Ingenia Gardens in 2017 that honoured his son, a builder by trade, and brought together other young people to share their stories.

Detective Sergeant Meredith’s work encourages people to open up about their personal battles and break the stigma about mental health.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb congratulated Detective Sergeant Meredith on the award, which recognises his service to education and to youth.

“It is a proud moment when a police officer is recognised for their outstanding service to the community, above and beyond when they wear their uniform,” said Commissioner Webb.

“Detective Sergeant Meredith’s personal experience makes him a great advocate for mental health and his work is invaluable in breaking down barriers and honouring his son’s legacy.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said Detective Sergeant Meredith epitomised a great country cop, showing both dedication to the force and a strong commitment to community.

“Detective Sergeant Meredith has proven to be an outstanding person both on and off the beat who continues to share an important message to his community about the importance of opening up and speaking up when you’re not ok,” said Mr Toole.
