A man will face court today charged after crashing into multiple vehicles, almost striking pedestrians, and leading police on a pursuit in Sydney’s south overnight.
About midnight (Saturday 27 July 2019), a Hyundai Getz travelled north on East Street, Sutherland, and allegedly crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided with a Toyota Corolla being driven south, causing it to spin and hit a parked Holden Commodore.
The Hyundai continued north on East Parade and at the intersection of Adelong Street has again allegedly crossed on to the incorrect side of the road. Another Toyota Corolla pulled over in attempt to avoid a collision; however, was hit by the Hyundai.
Witnesses from a nearby café surrounded the vehicle; however; the Hyundai reversed and drove over a median strip and onto Oxford Street, narrowing missing the pedestrians.
The Hyundai continued north on Linden Street before colliding with a Suzuki Swift slowing to stop at a red traffic light at the intersection of The Grand Parade. The Hyundai reversed before allegedly ramming the Suzuki three more times and continuing on north on Linden Street.
Officers from Sutherland Police Area Command and the Public Order and Riot Squad responded and located the Hyundai travelling west on Menai Road at Bangor.
The driver failed to stop, and a low-speed pursuit was initiated.
At the intersection of Menai and Yala Roads, the Hyundai is alleged to driven through a red traffic light.
Police followed the Hyundai until it stopped on Anzac Parade. The driver and sole occupant refused to get out, and officers smashed a window before removing and arresting him.
After refusing a breath test at the scene, the 61-year-old man was taken to Sutherland Police Station where he is was subjected to a breath analysis, returning a negative result.
He was charged with refuse or fail to submit to breath test, drive motor vehicle menaces another with intent, not stop vehicle when directed to do so, and not stop at stop line at red light.
The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 27 July 2019).
The drivers of the vehicles involved were reportedly uninjured.
A male police constable is receiving treatment for minor injuries at St George Hospital after being involved in a collision at the intersection of President Avenue and Acacia Road, Sutherland, with a Mazda 3, whilst responding to the incident.
The crash will be subject to investigation.
