A man will appear in court today charged following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle across Sydney’s south and south-west.
About 8am yesterday (Monday 17 January 2022), police were notified after a truck was reported stolen overnight from a home at Carter Street, Lidcombe.
Following inquiries, police attempted to stop the truck travelling along the Western Motorway near Reservoir Road, Blacktown, about 8.40am.
The driver allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit was terminated and re-engaged a number of times throughout west and south-west Sydney, with several attempts made to stop the driver.
About 9.10am, officers deployed road spikes at the Northern Road, near Carrington Road, Oran Park; however, they were unsuccessful.
The pursuit was terminated, and the vehicle was monitored by PolAir travelling through several suburbs including Camden, Campbelltown, Liverpool, Bankstown and Cumberland.
About 11.30am, the vehicle collided with a semi-trailer at Sturt Street, Smithfield, before officers attached to the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) used a number of tactical options to stop the truck.
When officers approached the vehicle, the driver – a 33-year-old man – allegedly resisted and attempted to assault the officers.
The man was subsequently arrested and treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being transported to Westmead Hospital for further treatment.
He was released and taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and resist officer in execution of duty.
The Silverwater man was refused bail and is due to appear at Fairfield Local Court today (Tuesday 18 January 2022).
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
