NSW police lay charges after three separate assaults during weekend sport

Three men have been charged following a weekend of on-field confrontations, including the assault of a 12-year-old boy, at sporting events across NSW yesterday.

In the first incident, officers from Brisbane Water Police District were called to a sporting oval on Carrington Street, Narara, about 11am (Saturday 22 August 2020), after a fight broke out during a junior rugby league game.

It is alleged that a man ran onto the field and allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old boy. The boy was taken to Gosford Hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a Bateau Bay home about 1.30pm.

The man was taken to Gosford Police Station and charged with common assault. He is due to appear at Gosford Local Court on Thursday 12 November 2020.

In the second incident, following a verbal altercation between players from opposing soccer teams in a park on Wollongong Road, Arncliffe, one player allegedly punched his coach in the face after being sent off about 4.50pm.

Officers from St George Police Area Command commenced inquiries and arrested an 18-year-old man at a home on Station Street, Arncliffe about 4.50pm.

He was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with affray and behave in offensive manner in/near public place/school before being granted conditional bail to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 1 September 2020.

Finally, in the state’s west, a referee was knocked unconscious after allegedly being punched in the face during an on-field altercation at a rugby league competition held at a sporting oval on Perry Street, Menindee, about 3.45pm.

The referee, a 47-year-old man, was treated by St Johns Ambulance paramedics and taken to the Menindee Health Service for treatment.

Officers from Barrier Police District were at the field and arrested a 26-year-old man.

He was taken to Broken Hill Police Station and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm before being granted conditional bail to appear in Broken Hill Local Court on Tuesday 22 September 2020.
