NSW Police ‘Step Up’ for a good cause

A law enforcement ‘Flame of Hope’ will light the way ahead of the annual ‘Step UP! For Down Syndrome’ event in Sydney today (Sunday 29 September 2019).

Law Enforcement Torch Run NSW (LETR NSW) and the NSW Police Force will be supporting the annual ‘Step UP! For Down Syndrome’ Sydney walk with a special torch procession.

The ‘Flame of Hope’ will travel from the Sydney Opera House to the Domain, ahead of the official walk.

‘Step UP! For Down Syndrome’ is an initiative that brings the community together through fundraising events to celebrate the achievements of people living with Down Syndrome.

LETR NSW is a charitable fund which comprises volunteer officers from the NSW Police Force, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Corrective Services NSW and the Australian Federal Police, working together in support of Special Olympics NSW.

NSW Police have been active supporters of The Law Enforcement Torch Run since it was established in 2002.

The charity supports intellectually disabled people living in NSW via their participation in the Special Olympics, which gives people opportunities to achieve personal goals through sports training and competitions across Australia.

“NSW Police has long championed vulnerable community groups, including people with special needs, and we are honoured to once again support the Law Enforcement Torch Run and raise awareness about Down Syndrome,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Craner said.

“Without these community events, organisations would not have the funds needed to deliver services, programs and support for people living with Down Syndrome to help them reach their full potential.”

Events are being held across Australia to recognise Down Syndrome awareness month and raise funds and knowledge about the condition.

The ‘Flame of Hope’ will leave the Sydney Opera House at 10am today (Sunday 29 September 2019), following a route through the Botanical Gardens to the Domain. The torch is expected to arrive at 10.25am, before the ‘Step UP! For Down Syndrome’ walk begins at 10.30am from the Domain.
