NTEU ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Council members today endorsed the proposed ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Job Protection Framework, which aims to save more than 12,000 jobs as the sector confronts its worst ever crisis.
Eighty per cent of 107 rank and file NTEU ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Councillors from every university branch around the country supported the proposal.
Australian universities have lost more than $4.5 billion in revenue after enrolments collapsed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After a robust debate, our ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Councillors have reached a difficult but necessary decision. We have been guided by the urgent need to save as many careers and livelihoods as we possibly can,” NTEU ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ President Dr Alison Barnes said today.
“Now is the time for union members to unite to pressure the Federal Government and universities to support the framework.
“University Vice Chancellors must support the jobs protection framework because it is the best opportunity we have to protect our campuses and the livelihoods of university staff,” Dr Barnes said.
“The Federal Government must provide a genuine relief package for Australian universities. More than 30,000 individuals face the prospect of losing their income.”
“Our ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Day of Action to be held tomorrow, May 21, involves members around the country targeting Minister Tehan with a range of activities.”
Dr Barnes said the national vote of NTEU members will likely be held later next week to ensure members have as much information as possible before being asked to vote.
