Kingston’s new on-demand hard waste collection service has officially launched.
With the aim of providing greater flexibility for households and reducing the amount of illegally dumped rubbish across our city, this new service enables residents to book two complimentary pick-ups each financial year on the dates and at the times that suit them. Previously Kingston offered one collection per year during spring.
The two annual free hard waste collections provide an opportunity to dispose of e-waste, white goods, furniture, and mattresses, among other approved household items.
Mayor Hadi Saab said our community expressed a strong desire for more flexibility and the new service has been developed to meet this clear need.
“While the hard waste disposal and recycling guidelines aren’t changing, we believe that expanding and tailoring the service will reduce the instances of illegal dumping across our city. In turn less waste will be sent to landfills and recycling will increase,” Cr Saab said.
“While most people have traditionally done the right thing, we have seen an alarming increase in dumping in recent years, with the cost to ratepayers now well over $200,000 each year.
“The change to the hard waste service is part of significant work being done around waste, recycling and resource recovery, with a view to improving sustainability and promoting better environmental outcomes.”
