High above the waters in south-east Asia, the P-8A Poseidon cuts through the skies, its advanced sensors scanning the vast maritime environment.
Piloting this state-of-the-art aircraft is Flight Lieutenant James Lowing from 11 Squadron, part of 92 Wing.
Operating under the Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program, Flight Lieutenant Lowing plays a vital role in contributing to regional security and stability as part of Operation Gateway.
“For me, flying the Poseidon is more than just operating an incredible aircraft, it’s about being part of something bigger – contributing to shared security in a region that’s vital to Australia and our partners,” he said.
“Every mission presents unique circumstances and challenges, from unpredictable weather to complex operating environments, but overcoming these hurdles is what makes our role so rewarding.
“I take personal pride in contributing to Operation Gateway. It’s been a dream of mine to captain the P-8 for a long time and this is definitely fulfilling.”

Operating out of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base Butterworth, the P-8A Poseidon and its crews work closely with their Malaysian counterparts, reinforcing a decades-long defence partnership.
This collaboration through the Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program highlights the importance of working together to maintain regional stability and address common challenges.
Officer Commanding 92 Wing Detachment Alpha Squadron Leader Andrew Bartlett, emphasised the broader significance of the operation.
“Operations like Gateway enhance maritime domain awareness and demonstrate the strength of our partnerships in the region,” Squadron Leader Bartlett said.
“Our collaboration with Malaysia as part of Operation Gateway is pivotal to contributing to a stable and secure maritime environment.
“Cooperation between nations is the foundation of regional stability. Through joint efforts like Operation Gateway, we enhance our collective capability to address shared challenges while fostering trust and long-term security.
“Being here at Butterworth strengthens the bond between our forces.
