The City of Fremantle’s One Day in Fremantle event has been recognised as one of the best events in Western Australia.
The 2019 edition of One Day has been named as a state finalist in the Best Community Event category at the prestigious Australian Event Awards – the premier awards for the events industry in Australia.
The Best Community Event category recognises the benefits achieved by an event through community building and community engagement.
For each category, the two highest ranked events in each state or territory are awarded State/Territory Finalist status.
The winners will be announced at the Australian Event Awards and Symposium to be held at Optus Stadium on 18 September.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said One Day’s inclusion as a state finalist was deserved recognition for the City’s events team.
“Staging One Day is a huge undertaking that requires a massive amount of planning and effort,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“It goes all day across a number of different venues, requires the coordination of dozens of artists and contributors and attract a crowds of thousands of people.
“To be named as a state finalist in the Australian Event Awards is a fantastic achievement not just for our events team but also our people in Community Development, Communications and Media and Parks and Landscapes.”
This year’s One Day in Fremantle event started with a traditional smoking ceremony at Bathers Beach followed by other Aboriginal cultural activities at Kidogo Arthouse.
It culminated with the One Day concert at the Esplanade Reserve featuring ARIA award winner Montaigne and emerging Indigenous artists Adrian Eagle and Emily Warramara.
In June this year One Day in Fremantle was recognised with an Australian Government award for promoting Indigenous reconciliation when the event took out the Promoting Indigenous Recognition category at the 2019 ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Awards for Local Government in Canberra.
