Hobsons Bay’s youngest residents and their parents will be delighted with the jam-packed calendar of free online events for the 14thannual Hobsons Bay Children’s Week from Sunday 25 October to Sunday 1 November.

A diverse range of fun interactive events with an educational twist are on offer, including art classes, online storytime, live music and cultural performances, and science experiments.

To launch the week’s activities, join Formidable Vegetable for live stay-at-home, garden-themed musical performances on Sunday 25 October at 10am and 1pm. Using songs and humour, children will learn how to plant seeds, preserve food, ferment vegies, and regrow veggie scraps on windowsills.

Children, aged three to eight, will be amazed at the world of butterflies, bugs and all things creepy crawly with Labcoat Learning on Wednesday 28 October at 10am. Then at 12pm, learn all about bees and look inside a beehive.

For parents and carers, the Australian Breastfeeding Association will run a session via Zoom on juggling a toddler and new baby, on Thursday 29 October at 1pm and at 6.30pm don’t miss a webinar on Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child presented by Frances Bilbao, Clinical Psychologist and founder of Mums Matter Psychology.

On Saturday 31 October, join First Nations recording star Mitch Tambo for a live cultural presentation at 3pm and 4pm.

To close the week’s entertainment and for the big finale, one of Australia’s most acclaimed and widely toured children’s performance acts, The Kazoos, will have children dancing and laughing on Sunday 1 November at 3pm.

As part of the week’s festivities, Council is also hosting a virtual art competition. Children in Hobsons Bay are invited to use art to express what Hobsons Bay means to them for the chance to win prizes for first, second or third prize in each age category (3-5 years, 6-8 years and 9-12 years). The competition opens on Sunday 25 October and closes on Sunday 1 November.

During the week, Hobsons Bay Libraries will deliver a range of events covering all ages including Baby Bounce (0-12 months), Wriggle and Read (1-3 years), Tiny Artists Online (1-5 years), Storytime (3 plus) and Creative Kids Club (5-12 years).

There will also be pre-recorded events available from Sunday 25 October including science experiments, wildlife in Hobsons Bay and Melbourne City Football Club (South Kingsville) will demonstrate soccer training exercises and drills.

The calendar of events replaces the traditional Children’s Week event at Logan Reserve and is in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education and Training.

Children’s Week is a national celebration that recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children. The theme this year is ‘Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others’.
