opening bounce of Premier’s Reading Challenge

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

Reading is fun and should be fun for everyone.

Just like football, the more you practise, the better you get and as Minister for Education, it gives me great delight to launch the Premier’s Reading Challenge today.

Since 2016 we have established a strong partnership with the Hawthorn Football Club which is encouraging more children to read books.

The successful partnership has seen more than 28,000 students complete the Challenge over the first two years. During this time, I am delighted to say there has been an increase in boys completing the Challenge.

I encourage all Tasmanian students from Prep to Grade 6 to take part in the challenge, no matter what your reading level.

I also encourage parents to get involved. Helping your child choose books and listening to them read are great ways to help your child to engage in reading.

The Challenge is to read 10 books in 10 weeks and there are plenty of prizes to win throughout the journey. Among them, tickets to Hawthorn games and school visits from players.

We are also introducing new Reading Ambassadors, made up of both players and students, to help keep children motivated to finish the Challenge.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge runs from 29th of April 2019 until the 5th
