Construction of the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre (BARC) redevelopment is nearing completion with principal contractor Brooker Builders and their tradies working tirelessly to get the job complete.

Council had anticipated the facility would be fully open to the public by Easter this year; based on the current construction timeline it is more realistic that the facility will be available for public use in early to mid-May.

Council’s Director Development Paul Holton said both the defects inspection and the final building inspection (for the issuing of a Certificate of Occupancy) are scheduled to occur in late April.

“Council officers anticipate that minor works, including addressing building defects and refurbishing the current change room, will continue once the building is open to the public,” Mr Holton said.

An official opening for the project is currently being planned for June.

“Recently the community has been able to view through fencing the new aquatics area and water play features, the spa and sauna and on-deck change areas.”

The contractors are finalising the last of the internal and external works, including some steel work, painting, landscaping and civil works.

The new warm water pool was recently filled and a world-class ‘pool pod’, to provide greater all-ability access to the aquatic facilities, installed.

The project that includes a warm water pool, interactive children’s water play area, an expanded aquatic area and upgraded all-accessible change facilities, and expanded reception and café areas, will be a great community facility.

“In the meantime, both the BARC and Forge Theatre and Arts Hub are open and I encourage everyone to keep visiting and utilising these centres and the many programs council offers,” Mr Holton said.

“We thank all BARC members, user groups and individuals for their patience during the construction of the project.”

Council is contributing $3.55 million towards the project, with the Victorian Government providing $3 million from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.
