One person lost their life and one person sustained serious injuries in vehicle collisions over the weekend, while police detected 753 traffic offences on South Australian roads.
During Operation Safe Long Weekend – ANZAC 2022 on Friday 22 April – Monday 25 April 2022, police continuously patrolled roads across the State.
– 16,010 alcotests were conducted with 55 positive results returned (0.34% hit rate), alongside 914 drug tests of which 96 returned a positive result (10.5% hit rate).
– 520 speeding offences were detected during the period of this operation.
– 30 drivers and passenger were detected not wearing a seatbelt, whilst 52 drivers were caught for a distraction offence.
– 75 vehicles were impounded as a result of offences including drink driving, misuse of a motor vehicle, unregistered vehicles and licencing offences.
One driver, a 61-year-old man from Victoria sadly died after his truck had come off highway and crashed into a tree on Sunday 24 April at Warnertown.
Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge of Traffic Services Branch says, “Every life that is lost on our roads is one life too many. There are still too many drivers out there who are doing the wrong thing and it needs to stop.
“Police will continue to show an increased presence on South Australian roads to prevent such tragedies but every driver needs to do their part and drive carefully and responsibly too,” Superintendent Gray says.
There have been 24 lives lost on South Australian roads this year so far, compared to 37 lives at the same time in 2021.
