A major police operation has launched across Moreton Police District as part of a 10-day deployment targeting high-risk crime and serious repeat offenders.
Operation Whiskey Legion is a state-wide initiative aimed at improving community safety through proactive enforcement and engagement, yielding positive results during its deployment.
Since commencing on April 2, a total of 1,035 people have been charged with 2,395 offences as part of Operation Whiskey Legion.
The operation brings a surge capacity of specialist police from Highway Patrol, Crime and Intelligence Command, Rail Squad, Water Police, Dog Squad and Crime Prevention to work alongside local police focusing on high-risk offenders and hot spot areas across police districts.
North Coast Region Assistant Commissioner Glenn Morris said Legion is an injection of resources to strengthen community safety through proactive enforcement and community engagement.
“The community can expect to see a high visibility police presence on the roads, shopping precincts, transport hubs and other known hotspots as part of Operation Whiskey Legion,” Assistant Commissioner Morris said.
“Legion will also focus on less visible, yet high-harm offences including robberies, burglaries, serious assaults, vehicle theft and Domestic and Family Violence.
“The specialist fly-in teams will collaborate with the expert knowledge of local police to strategically swarm hot spots and target people who are causing significant harm to those around them or are a risk to public safety.
“The surge capacity will also be engaging with and supporting victims of crime.”
Crime and Intelligence Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Denzil Clark said Operation Whiskey Legion is coming to Moreton after achieving significant results through previous deployments across other parts of the South East.
“In total, more than 1,035 arrests have been made on more than 2,395 charges,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Clark said.
“That includes more than 840 adults charged with more than 1,800 offences and more than 195 juveniles charged with more than 585 offences.
“Some of those charges relate to very serious offences like armed robbery, break and enter, vehicle theft, assault and Domestic and Family Violence offences.
“Throughout the Operation so far, police have conducted more than 1,115 hot spot patrols, more than 605 wanding operations and more than 310 bail compliance checks.
“Police have also engaged with more than 2,110 victims.”
Moreton District Officer Acting Chief Superintendent Adam Guild said his crews are looking to replicate the success in Moreton.
“We’ll be focusing on proactive efforts to disrupt offending, locate serious offenders and support our community, to ensure the community is safe and feels safe,” Acting Chief Superintendent Guild said.
“The operation will compliment and back up the work completed by Taskforce Guardian’s recent deployment to Moreton, cracking down on youth crime.
“We look forward to having the additional resources in the district to build upon the great work local officers are already delivering, allowing us to look at crime from every angle.”
