The picturesque foreshore is one of
our region’s only truly remote coastal
reserves, much of it inaccessible by
road, and home to many unique plants
and animals.
The area is also an important breeding
ground for the critically endangered
hooded plover.
Alongside Conservation Volunteers
Australia, the City’s nature reserves
team and specialist contractors have
cleared about 40 hectares of harmful
weeds from the foreshore, allowing
native plants and shrubs to flourish.
Since 2014, the City, along with Ocean
Grove Coast Care and the Week Day
Weeders, have stepped-up efforts to
rapidly restore the natural habitat along
a five kilometre stretch of the foreshore,
after receiving $370,000 in funding
from the Corangamite Catchment
Management Authority.
The team’s hard work has had a
remarkably positive effect on the
local habitat throughout Buckley Park
foreshore, allowing an estimated
100,000 new native plants to naturally
regenerate in this unique and precious
coastal area.
