The University of Newcastle congratulates and celebrates all Australians recognised in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours, especially those belonging to the University’s esteemed community.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, said the University was proud to acknowledge the substantial contributions of its staff, alumni and donors.
“I’d like to extend my congratulations to all those recognised with this high honour and thank them for their dedication to the advancement of our region and beyond,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“These recipients are exemplars of the University’s commitment to excellence – the impact of this work they are doing in their professional fields and communities is truly inspiring.”
The University-affiliated recipients include:
Member of the Order of Australia (AM)
- Dr Patricia Davidson for significant service to medical administration, and to professional associations.
- Professor Michael Mahony for significant service to the life sciences, and to tertiary education.
- Ms Joanne McCarthy for significant service to the print media as a journalist.
- Mr David McCredie for significant service to Australia-United Kingdom business and trade relations.
- Mrs Lesley Salem for significant service to nursing, and to Indigenous health.
- Emeritus Professor Hilary Winchester for significant service to tertiary education, and to governance, committee and advisory roles.
Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)
- Mr Terry Charlton for service to the natural resource sector, to manufacturing, and to education.
- Dr Peter McGeoch for service to sports medicine.
- Dr Michelle Mulligan for service to medicine, particularly to anaesthesia.
Public Service Medal (PSM)
- Mr Simon Writer for outstanding public service in delivering an extensive legislative program, including comprehensive legislation packages in response to the Financial Services Royal Commission and the Government’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours list recognises 992 Australians, including 669 in the General Division of the Order of Australia, and awards for meritorious, distinguished and conspicuous service.
