Oval investment gets underway

Barossa Council

A major renewal of the main oval at Tanunda is set to begin, paving the way for a high-quality playing surface that will complete the redevelopment of Tanunda Recreation Park.

Reconstruction of the oval surface, including drainage and irrigation, will ensure the oval continues to act as a regional-level facility to attract national and state events and support Association football and cricket.

The renewal complements The Barossa Council’s multi-million program of works at the Park, which includes oval lighting, junior oval, cricket nets and new clubrooms and changerooms.

The project, which was included in this year’s budget, has been welcomed by Tanunda Football Club (TFC) and Tanunda Cricket Club (TCC).

TFC president Kym Underwood says it will create a safer, high quality environment for playing and training.

“Naturally our footy club is really excited but really, this is about more than just sport,” Kym said.

It’s so important to provide avenues for people, especially youth, to be active and participate in healthy activities.

TCC president Stuart Swan said it will provide certainty for the club in the seasons ahead.

“After many years of interrupted cricket because of the playing surface and drainage, this will future-proof our oval and really make it a showpiece,” Stuart said.

Mayor Bim Lange agreed, saying the Park will rival any other regional facility in the State.

“This will be a premier facility in regional South Australia, supporting our joint aspiration with the SANFL and SACA to develop the Barossa as a sports events tourism destination,” Mayor Lange said.

“Importantly, it also ensures our community can keep participating in grassroots sports like footy, cricket and touch footy, as well as enjoying the oval for everyday recreation.”

The oval will be unavailable until January, however the junior oval and Park precinct remain available for recreation activities and the annual Tanunda Show will go ahead in a modified format.
