Oxfam Australia

In response to the Australian Government’s announcement to provide funding for humanitarian relief and emergency supplies in response to the recent flooding in Bangladesh, Oxfam Australia Director Programs and Transformation, Chrisanta Muli said:

“It is heartening to see Australia stepping up to provide significant humanitarian aid in response to the devastating floods in Bangladesh. Oxfam welcomes the announcement that Australia will provide more than $1.8 million for humanitarian relief and emergency supplies in response to the recent flooding in Bangladesh.

“The scale and severity of the disaster, affecting nearly 6 million people and displacing over half a million, is truly overwhelming and makes it the worst flooding in Bangladesh in recent history, with extensive damage to sanitation facilities, infrastructures, homes, and agricultural lands extensively damaged, affected communities need immediate and sustained support.

“We welcome the announcement that the funding will be directed through Oxfam and BRAC, a Bangladeshi NGO and one of the world’s largest non-government organisations.

“Oxfam is currently providing the most affected communities with shelter, sanitation facilities, cash, hygiene kits, and food. In collaboration with partners, Oxfam is also planning long-term rehabilitation of critical water and sanitation networks, as well as supporting people to rebuild their lives.”
