Two teenage drivers have been issued infringement notices and had their licences suspended after allegedly being caught speeding during Day One of Operation Safe Return.
Operation Safe Return started at midnight on Friday 24 January 2020 and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday 27 January 2020.
Double demerits will be in force throughout the period for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.
NSW Police officers will also be targeting other poor driver behaviour, including drink-and-drug-driving.
About 10.35pm yesterday (Friday 24 January 2020), officers from Hawkesbury Traffic and Highway Patrol were conducting stationary speed enforcement in a 70km/h zone on Scheyville Road, Scheyville, when they detected two approaching vehicles on the lidar travelling at 154km/h and 145km/h.
Both vehicles were stopped and the male drivers – an 18-year-old from Kellyville and a 17-year-old from Glossodia – produced P1 provisional licences.
They were issued Traffic Infringement Notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and their licences were suspended for six months.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said it is very disappointing to see young people driving in this manner and has reminded the community to stick to the speed limit.
“Speed limits are there to keep drivers, passengers and pedestrians safe. Travelling at such high speeds is unacceptable at any time and it is lucky there wasn’t a more devastating outcome,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy Said.
“Driving is a privilege and road users need to be respectful of their surroundings, we want to see everyone return home safely to their family and friends”.

- About 7pm yesterday (Friday 24 January 2020), officers from Mid North Coast Police District attempted to stop a Mitsubishi Triton on Prince Street, Grafton. The vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The vehicle stopped a short time later and the driver fled the scene on foot. A 24-year-old man was arrested a short time later. The man returned a positive breath test and was taken to Grafton Police Station where he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.135. He was charged with police pursuit, mid-range PCA, resist/hinder police, disqualified driver and registration offences.
The man was refused bail to appear before Grafton Local Court today (Saturday 25 January 2020).
- A 34-year-old man was issued a future court attendance notice for the alleged offences of high-range PCA and possess prohibited drug after being stopped for a Stationary Random Breath Test about 10pm yesterday on Squires Way, Fairy Meadow. The man allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.216.
