Work has finished on a new protective concrete slab at the Paluma Dam spillway.
The $1.2 million project was the last in a series of upgrades to Paluma Dam designed to improve the durability and functionality of the spillway.
The new concrete slabs will protect the bridge’s foundations and ensure the spillway functions as needed during the wet season.
Townsville Water and Waste chairperson Russ Cook thanked the community and nearby residents for their cooperation during the important upgrade works.
“Over the past 12 months, we have continued to invest in critical infrastructure at Paluma Dam,” Cr Cook said.
“Along with the new slab, we have also replaced the steel flashboards and installed new rock anchors.
“The Bureau of Meteorology has warned us we are in a La Niña weather cycle, which means the potential for above-average rainfall during this wet season.
“The improvements will ensure the dam spillway continues to effectively manage any overflow events from the dam.”
Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said Council also carried out work on the Paluma Dam access road.
“We needed to be able to get the work on the spillway and the road finished before the wet weather set in for the summer,” Cr Rehbein said.
“I want to thank both residents and visitors for their patience and understanding while the essential works were being carried out.”
