Paragliders airborne at Mount Martha

Council resolved in December 2021 to help the Victorian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association apply for a licence to launch at Craigie beach, opposite Morrisons Avenue.

The process involved the club seeking State Government consent under the Marine and Coastal Act. The Shire then submitted a proposed licence agreement to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action for approval.

Paragliding previously took place at Craigie beach but was discontinued several years ago because it was unlicenced.

Quotes attributable to Mayor Councillor Steve Holland:

“I’m pleased Council was able to support the Victorian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association in its application for a licence.”

“This is a great outcome for the sport. There are limited sites on the Mornington Peninsula where paragliding is possible, with Flinders and the Point Nepean ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Park the only other locations.”

“The Peninsula has long been a destination for outdoor sports and recreation enthusiasts. I’m glad paragliders are once again able to enjoy the beauty of the Mount Martha coastline from the air.”
