The Heatley Park Upgrade tender has been awarded to JMAC Constructions – supporting up to 20 local jobs.
The project includes upgraded sports fields, new lighting, installing CCTV, improved irrigation, fitness equipment, playground and a pump track.
The upgrade received $3.1 million in funding under the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program and work is expected to start on Monday.
Local Councillor Kurt Rehbein said the project was a huge win for local families.
“This upgrade will provide top notch facilities, with something for everyone from young kids to parents and fitness fanatics,” Cr Rehbein.
“Council has been working closely with the local community on this upgrade and I’m sure it will be a big hit with local families.”
“I’ve been lobbying for this project since being elected and I’d like to thank the Queensland Government for supporting it with $3.1 million in funding.”
Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe praised Council for delivering the upgrade in partnership with the Palaszczuk Government.
“These great new fitness facilities are yet another example of how Works for Queensland is delivering for Townsville residents,” he said.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said the Heatley Park Upgrade will provide first class facilities for local families.
“This upgrade supports 20 local jobs and will deliver improved public spaces for the local community,” Mr Harper said.
“The Works for Queensland program is all about building better community facilities while creating jobs for locals.”
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said Council was focused on upgrading parks and public spaces right across the community.
“This Council has a big focus on upgrading local parks and maintaining them to the highest standards,” Cr Molachino said.
“Public spaces play a huge role in the community and we want to encourage an active and healthy community that is connected with each other.”
