Upgrades to a section of Gregory Street have improved the usability and safety for motorists and cyclists.
Townsville City Council secured $267,000 in funding through the Federal Government’s Black Spot program to install concrete medians at the intersection of Paxton and Gregory Streets, change parking and line mark dedicated bike lanes on Gregory Street between Stanley and Eyre Street.
Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the road was one of the most used in the city.
“Gregory Street is one of the main roads used to get to Castle Hill, The Strand, shops, restaurants, homes, schools and the city,” Cr Rehbein said.
“In June work was carried out to improve the road surface and drainage along the well-used street.
“Council secured additional funding through the Black Spot program to also install concrete medians at the Paxton Street and Gregory Street intersection, create a bike lane, line marking and change parking from nose-in to reverse-in.
“Black Spot projects target road locations where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring.
“The parking change from nose-in to reverse-in gives motorists better visibility as they leave their parking spot to make it safer for them as they pull out.
“The bike lane helps improve safety for cyclists and give confidence to more people to use a bike to get around the city.”
“The new parking arrangements are in place now and we encourage anyone using the parking along that section of Gregory Street to note the new reverse-in spaces.”
