Swan Hill Rural City Council condemns the actions of vandals over the weekend, who have damaged parking metres right across the Swan Hill CBD.
Mayor Cr Les McPhee said acts of senseless vandalism like this are incredibly disappointing and expensive to repair.
“Over the weekend approximately 85% of parking meters, in the Swan Hill CBD were damaged, meaning they are now out of action, for an undefined period of time.
“This disappointing act, by mindless thugs, will create a significant and completely unnecessary cost to local ratepayers,” Cr McPhee said.
Cr McPhee said that for the time being, parking meters within the Swan Hill CBD will be switched off.
“Meters have been damaged so severely that until repair works can be completed, the parking meters will be switched off.
“During this time Council officers will be rigorously enforcing time limit patrols, to ensure parking turnover.
“While payment will not be required for meters, during this time, parking signage must still be followed – parking fines will still be issued to people that are not following parking signage,” he said.
Cr McPhee said the vandalism had been reported to Police and the incident was being investigated.
“We are calling on the community to please report any anti-social activity to the Police Assistance Line 131 444 or Crimestoppers 1800 333 000.
“If you see something, say something,” Cr McPhee added.
