The City of Parramatta will be buzzing with live music on Friday 21 June as Western Sydney entertainers celebrate the global event, Make Music Day.
Musicians Mike Akox, Yacou Mbaye, Mel Bailey and Mike Champion will perform free concerts in Centenary Square, Parramatta and Jacaranda Square, Sydney Olympic Park, in a special partnership between the City of Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park Authority.
“The City of Parramatta is proud to be part of the worldwide Make Music Day celebrations. Not only will the concerts help to build community spirit, they will also showcase some of our best emerging local talent,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson said.
Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s Manager, Arts and Culture, Tony Nesbitt, said members of the public are also welcome to step up to the mic at Jacaranda Square.
“This is all about celebrating the most universal of all art forms – music. As well as professional musicians from Western Sydney, we’re inviting all the locals who sing or play to be part of our open mic sessions at Sydney Olympic Park,” Mr Nesbitt said.
Train commuters travelling between Sydney Olympic Park and Lidcombe will also be treated to live music by Uyghur vocalist Shohrat Tursun and Ghanaian percussionist Yaw Derkyi.
The Make Music Day events in Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park, now in their second year, are supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
Make Music Day is a global celebration of music that takes place on 21 June every year. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is celebrated in more than 800 cities across 120 countries.
